The Ebenezer Incident
A Rigged Site: A fine example of Susan's type of paranormal investigative fraud
Ebenezer Church, Clarke County,  VA
July 9, 2005
In July 2005 Susan led, according to her own count around 30 members (30 x $25 = $750) to yet another cemetery,
this one at Ebenezer Church in Clarke County, VA, that has never even been reported as being haunted
(http://www.
theshadowlands.net/places/virginia.htm).  The fact that Ebenezer has not made it onto the Shadowlands.net
haunted places is a side note, because that definitely does not mean there is no activity there, just something that is
interesting. Anyway as Susan herself describes,"
Then, as people were sharing their group’s experiences, the
strangest thing of all happened.
The church bell rang…three times…very slowly.  It was heart-stopping! Everyone
in our group was gathered in the pavilion.  The bell was on the far side of the Church after a stunned moment, I
rushed toward the bell.  I didn’t see anyone running from the site nor hear anyone crunching through the forest
debris.  All I saw was the clapper of the bell, still moving slowly within the bell structure. Had a ghostly hand rung the
bell in a final warning to leave the site or had a clever and silent prankster “pulled our chain?”  We’ll never know."
Well the way I heard is a little different.  The investigation had turned up nothing just a melodramatic attack, tons of
pictures of pollen, bugs, and dust which Susan declared to be orbs, of course some "miasmas" (not an accepted
paranormal term, evidentially the term was coined by Susan with respect to the paranormal), and of course psychic
feelings of a dark entity.  As the investigation continued several of the more experienced members had broke away
to investigate an earlier ringing of the bell. They soon realized that there was a rope attached to fishing line that was
strung over the utility lines leading into the woods.  As they traced the line back into the woods they found the end
and pulled.  Amazingly the bell rang just as described by Susan,  the problem is her story leaves out some of the
finer points of what actually happened.  Susan did not rush over to the woods, she actually stood there stunned,
probably afraid that she had actually found a real ghost for once.  In reality she feared that someone had
discovered the rigged bell and immediately declared the investigation was over and told everyone to leave.  The
experienced members who had discovered the rigged bell requested everyone's attention and showed everybody
there how the bell was rigged to ring when the fishing line was pulled by someone concealed by the woods.  Below
is a
Will Astle was at the investigation and this is his first hand account of the bell incident, he wrote:

A little background first.  I had emailed Susan to let her know that I possibly wasn't going to be there but Felicia, my
wife, was going.  Susan had sent an 'invite' out earlier in the week in which she said to not bring flashlights.  I thought
this was rather odd as she had never said this before.

As it turned out my plans fell through and I showed up at the meeting place.  People were whispering that when
Susan saw me it looked as if she'd seen a ghost.

We all drove to the church location and I baited Susan a little.  I said to her privately "I've got a weird feeling here
tonight" and she agreed.  All night I was shadowed by Susan's partner Dawn.  She never let me get too far away
and all night things were 'flying' around in the woods.

After an hour or so Susan called everyone back to the covered picnic area.  After a few minutes the bell in front of
the church started to ring.  I grabbed Aaron, one of the other senior investigators and circled around the back of the
church while everyone else was rushing to the front of the church.  My rationale was that whoever run the bell was
going to circle around the back of the church to quietly mix back in with the group.

As I came around the front side of the church Susan was screaming that we needed to leave right away and was
making a big production about how she didn't want to stick around and that someone had made it obvious that they
didn't want us there.  I have a red light attached to my digital camera and i started looking at the bell.  I noticed that
the nylon cord attached to the bell was sticking straight out parallel to the ground.  I thought, that's strange, and
then I my light illuminated the fishing line.

I called out to one of the group's most senior investigators, Mike.  He came over at the obviously dislike of Susan.
As Mike and I are examining the bell and the fishing Susan is screaming "we have to leave NOW!!"

Mike, I and a few others traced the fishing line across the church driveway to a tree just down the embankment from
the driveway.  I wanted to venture down into the woods but I wasn't sure if I'd find a neighbor who didn't want us
there or I might find a fellow ghost hunter's relative.

We left out of the place and went to meeting place not too far away where we could discuss what had just
happened.  Susan made it a point to chastise Mike for investigating the fishing line instead of helping get people out
of the site.  Several people, who are still associated with the Society, made it a point to say that this was
UNDOUBTEDLY paranormal. I argued with all of them that regardless of what caused the bell to ring the mere fact
that the fishing line was there negated any claims of it being paranormal.

Monday I went back to the site and the fishing line has been removed. All except for about 8 inches of frayed fishing
line.
Here is the advertisement Susan sent to all of her members trying to recruit people for the "investigation" at
Ebenezer.  As you can see this clearly states, "Don’t even bring a flashlight!", I wonder why could it be so nobody
discovers fishing line strung all the way across the church driveway into the woods.  What a con artist, she is
promising a genuine paranormal experience while she has already made plans to rig the bell.  Once again here is
West Virginia Attorney General's Consumer Hot  Line: 1-800-368-880. Honestly I would be furious if I had been
one of the 30 people that paid her for this.  For her to be brazen enough  to instruct people to bring no flashlights
she must have a very low opinion of her members intellect.  Obviously she underestimated everyone's intellect
because this incident brought her scam completely out in the open, months before we exposed the harassment and
lies she has put our group through.

AFTER ACTION REPORT:

DARK ENERGY & GHOST HUNTERS COLLIDE

July 9, 2005

by Susan Crites

Putting together a report on this Paranormal Investigation is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle with hundreds of
pieces! “Contact” with the supernatural was everywhere!

On a near-moonless night, thirty or so Ghost Hunters approached a remote, silent, soupy-black, church yard with a
nervous anticipation born of the knowledge that the place has a long history of eerie activity.  Everyone was on high
alert…dark energy alert!

The site is in the rough shape of an oval race track.  An old church, a covered pavilion, and gloomy, long forgotten
graves are surrounded by a heavy concentration of trees and scrub.  There’s nothing groomed about the place; the
ground is uneven and walking is difficult.  It’s so dark that nothing is visible beyond 20 feet in the front of the site.
Visibility falls to four or five feet in the back.

Small teams of determined Ghost Hunters left the pavilion where we gathered to enter this intimidating site; more
experienced people were in groups of two or three while less experienced people were in groups of six or seven led
by a Senior Paranormal Investigator. Within a few steps, they disappeared from view.  Unnervingly, their footsteps in
the dry forest debris and their voices were swallowed up in the darkness almost immediately.

The action started instantly!

Beth H., one of our most reliable photographers, took a quick shot from the pavilion toward the graveyard behind it
and captured thick miasma.  There was no ground fog and miasma wasn’t visible to the naked eye but, a quick
glance at her digital camera screen showed thick, boiling miasma with a face glaring at us from its center.

One by one, our Psychics reported sensing a disturbing, menacing energy throughout the site.  Dark shadows were
seen darting from tree to tree.  No one screamed when something like gunfire boomed and echoed through the site
or when something with claws scrambled down from the peaked roof of the church. Explosions of miasma erupted
from the ground by the graves then, just as suddenly disappeared. Widely separated groups began to report
something flying at them; small stones, large tree branches…something.

Then, a cracking, guttural male voice said something…very slowly and deliberately… to us all over the Walkie-
Talkies, “Get…out… of… here!”  There was no characteristic “click” before or after the voice.  In normal
communications over the Walkies, depressing or releasing the button to talk causes a distinctive click. This voice
simply echoed out of the devices.  It made one’s blood run cold!

When we ignored the warning, things amped up!

In the back of the site two Ghost Hunters were attacked.  Mike F., who seems to attract violent attention from the
supernatural, was pushed to his knees by a rough, cold ghostly hand.  Those around him said they felt a sudden,
cold breeze pass them just before he fell. Robin B. and Aaron M. first saw a bottle hurtle through the air at them
then, Robin felt something grab her at the back of her neck and pull her backward!

Something that looked like a camp fire rose from the forest floor and moved from left to right, grew taller, then
disappeared. Temperatures soared then fell by as much as twenty degrees.  Supernatural action was happening
everywhere.

When I called the group back to the pavilion to discuss what was happening in various parts of the site, everyone in
the group seemed relieved to be out of the energy and in the safety of a larger group of people.

Then, as people were sharing their group’s experiences, the strangest thing of all happened.  The church bell
rang…three times…very slowly.  It was heart-stopping! Everyone in our group was gathered in the pavilion.  The
bell was on the far side of the church.

After a stunned moment, I rushed toward the bell.  I didn’t see anyone running from the site nor hear anyone
crunching through the forest debris.  All I saw was the clapper of the bell, still moving slowly within the bell structure.
Had a ghostly hand rung the bell in a final warning to leave the site or had a clever and silent prankster “pulled our
chain?”  We’ll never know.

This site, with its dark and aggressive energy is a superb training ground for Ghost Hunters.  Feeling the massive,
unmistakable dark energy forever prepares Ghost Hunters for their next encounter.  It’s chilling, frightening and
unforgettable.  Each of these Ghost Hunters will always be able to recognize this danger!

Congratulations to everyone on this Paranormal Investigation for their determination and courage.  They made
“Contact!”
